October 15, 2023

The Lost Meander always wants to bring out the best in people by getting you out of your comfort zone. Each week for the next few weeks we will discuss what the title of this blog says: The Importance of Hunting and its Health Benefits.

Now I understand that hunting can be very controversial. Some people love it and are passionate about it, and why others thinks it is medieval , primitive and down right cruel. This article will not have any political agenda, instead it is going to give you some positive facts about hunting and the benefits. As a disclaimer, yes there are people that are irresponsible when they hunt, yes there are poachers that break the law, but all in all hunters do more for conservation that any other group. They generate over billion dollars to conservation each year and that is just to start.

As hunting is a time honored tradition for thousands of years, it has evolved into  not only a cultural and historical significance but also there are health benefits that should be looked at more closely.

Lets look at my  one of my favorite parts of hunting and that is the nutrient-rich organic meat that animals in the wild give us. The primary goal for most hunters is the game meat that animals provide.  The lean source of protein that is free from the typical hormonal meat that we usually find in the grocery store is natural for our body. Eating meat like venison, waterfowl or ek, is not only rich in protein , but also high in the essential nutrients like zinc, iron and omega-3 fatty acids but also extremely low in fat. To put this into perspective we will look at pork. For every 3.5 oz. of meat from a farm raised pig there are 242 calories, 27 grams of protein, and 14 grams of fat. It’s counterpart the wild boar has 160 calories, 28.3 grams of protein and 1.4 grams of fat. Simple math tells me which one is better for you. Oh and by the way, those meats are delicious.

As I have said before, stick around and over the course of the next few weeks we will continue to discuss the health benefits of hunting.

By the way did you find the deer in the picture?
