If you have read part 1 of the late season tips , part 2 will hopefully help you put it all together. Not everyone is going to be successful, but if we work together, share ideas, stories and techniques we all have a better chance. So let’s do this! Here are 4 more tips to help out.
1. Deer want to feel comfortable no matter what time of the year it is. Have you notice that some really huge bucks get killed in the early season? This is due to lack of pressure. They are on a routine and that routine only changes when we entire their domain. In the late season this is no different. Most people don’t want to go out when it is really cold. Don’t worry deer are going to move as we talked about in the first part. This means changing things up for us. Look for those places that are tough to get into where they don’t feel pressure. As a friend once said to me, “Deer love the thick nasty places we don’t want to go.” So guess what, you didn’t go there during the early season, time to move there now.
2. Think about an all day hunt instead of hunting the morning or the evening. You will have a better chance seeing deer move and it is more likely they will not notice you there. Deer are creatures of habit. If you are hunting an area all the time, they know when you get there and when you leave. So watch the wind and sit all day.
3. If you decide to sit in the cold all day, remember that you need to stay warm, and you absolutely need clothing that is scent controlled. I mentioned they know when you are there. On the days when it is dry and very cold, deer have a harder time smelling us. Scent controlled clothing is always key, but during the winter make sure they are also warm. Check out ScentLok bib and jacket. They have clothing for all types of weather.
4. It’s cold, possibly wet and it can be miserable out. Does that mean you stop hunting? Of course not! In most states gun season is over and you are back to using your bow or crossbow. Now imagine if you are sitting for a while. Now try and draw that bow back and hold it while your target buck walks by. Practice shooting in the cold weather. Yes you might have shot all summer and into the fall, but that is under ideal conditions. Take the time and get out there. Make a good shot because you practiced and worked out the kinks than a bad shot because you were lazy.
Best of luck as we move into the late season. Fill that freezer and enjoy the meat you earned!
