Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall a good streamer in any type of water can work wonders. Now everyone has there favorites including me. I love using a kreelex. They are simple to make and are very deadly in clear water on a sunny day. This past weekend I got a chance to tie a new fly that is just as deadly. Let me introduce you to the Peanut Envy. This fly has not one but two hook and it takes a while to tie correctly. Now the history of this fly goes back to Russ Madden’s extremely popular Circus Peanut Fly. Kelly Galloup’s Envy is modified to use a brass conehead instead of lead eyes.
There are a lot of great fly-tying instructors and Tom Feeney of Gunpowder Fly Company has a gift for teaching new and experienced anglers. At GreatFeathers Fly shop located in Sparks, Maryland I got a chance to sit down with a few guys and tie the Peanut Envy. Let’s just say this fly takes a while. I will start by saying this is a more advanced fly, but Tom made it crystal clear what need to be done in a step by step lesson. After he showed us a step he would check over each person’s work before we moved on to the next one. The marabou helps this fly look extremely enticing to fish and flows through the water. The longer body, sparkle of some dubbing and the 3d articulation beads give this fly some great action under water.
After talking to Tom about when to use this fly he said this is his go to fly year round. He did say losing one of these flies hurts a bit since they take a while to build, but if built correctly it will tease the most stubborn trout.
Remember to check out your local fly shop for different types of classes like fly tying or euro nymphing. There is always a way to take your game to the next level no matter the experience you have on the river. Plus its always great to have great conversation with local fly fisherman and support your local fly shop.
