If you are a turkey hunter then spring is a magical time. Turkeys are moving and hunters love the challenge of taking one each year. Unlike deer, turkeys are incredibly tough to hunt.Turkeys have impeccable eyesight. Match that with the fact they are extremely wary, they notice anything that is out of place and will immediately turn tail and disappear. Turkeys can have very distinctive calls and trying to mimic those sounds can be tough. Each year they change their patterns throughout the hunting season, which make hunters have to adapt regularly. If you want to be successful, here a few tested tips and tricks to increase your odds and be successful this year.
Like any hunting, you need to get out there and scout the area. Look for turkeys roosting high in trees, and specific scratches on the ground. Finding feeding and travel areas are key.
Decoys in the right positions will help attract turkeys within an effective shooting distance. Make sure when they are placed to get a good spot that you can sit there and be comfortable for a long time. Camouflage is huge, especially your face. Cover up everything.
Hopefully you have practicing your turkey calls. It is one of the most effective ways to draw in a tom. Box calls are great but try and master mouth calls. This helps you keep your hand on your gun and ready to shoot.
Make sure you are hunting hose peak times, and following your own state regulations. Early mornings and late afternoons are your best times. During this time turkeys are most active. Windy days can be a great time to hunt as it conceals your moment to get to your spot.
Lastly patience is key. Stay alert and listen for turkey calls or any movement nearby. Try not to overcall and keep any movement to an absolute minimum.
Hopefully many of these tips are useful to you as you prepare for your season to start. As always talk to other hunters and listen to their strategies. Preparation is the key and hopefully you will have a successful season! Bet of luck out there!
