Maximize Your Chances: Rut Season Buck Hunting Strategies

November 8, 2024

Success during the rut, when bucks are most active and driven by mating instincts, requires a strategic approach. Here are five tips to maximize your chances, as well as suggestions for items to attract bucks and the best places to look for them:

1. Timing is Everything:

Bucks are most active during dawn and dusk, especially in areas where hunting pressure is high. Plan to be in your stand early and stay as late as possible to catch them moving.

Midday hunting can also be surprisingly productive during the rut, as bucks may be on the move all day searching for does. The best part about midday hunting is most hunters are out during the mornings or evening. Bucks feel a little less pressure during the day.

2. Hunt Near Doe Bedding Areas:

Bucks will often linger near doe bedding areas during the rut. If you can find a safe distance to set up, you’ll have a good chance of encountering a mature buck that’s shadowing the does.

Pay attention to trails leading in and out of these areas, as they can be hotspots for buck activity. If you do see a trail, try to avoid walking on it and leaving your scent.

3. Use Calling and Rattling:

Grunt calls and rattling antlers can be very effective during the rut. Bucks are more aggressive and territorial, responding to the sounds of other bucks competing. Do not over call! Spread it out giving a 15-30 minute wait between calls.

Use a sequence of grunts followed by rattling to mimic a fight. This can attract dominant bucks looking to establish dominance.

4. Scent Control and Lure Usage:

During the rut, scent control is crucial, as bucks can still be cautious. Use scent-eliminating sprays on your gear and clothing.

Doe estrous scents and scent drags can work wonders. Hang scent wicks in strategic locations upwind of your stand to draw bucks in.

5. Stay Mobile:

If you’re not seeing action in one area, don’t hesitate to move. Bucks can cover large distances during the rut, so being able to adjust your location based on activity can be critical.

Use trail cameras to monitor movement patterns in different areas and relocate your setup if necessary. During the rut this is key since bucks are chasing doe constantly.

Best Items to Draw in Big Bucks:

1. Doe Estrous Scent:

This scent mimics a doe in heat, which is irresistible to bucks during the rut. Brands like Tink’s #69 Doe-in-Rut or Code Blue Estrous can be very effective. Personally we love using Wildlife Research Center – Golden Rope Scent Kit – Scent Rope for Deer Hunting – Natural Fiber Rope. Hang this from a low branch and watch as bucks come and out there scent on it. Easy to use and recommended by our friend Melissa Bachman!

2. Rattling Antlers:

You can use either real antlers or synthetic ones to mimic the sound of bucks fighting. This can trigger a buck’s natural instinct to investigate or challenge other bucks.

3. Grunt Calls:

A buck grunt call can be used to simulate the sounds of bucks communicating, which can draw in curious or aggressive bucks looking to assert their dominance. Flextone Outdoor Hunting Realistic Mature & Young Buck Sounds Freeze-Proof Headhunter’s Extractor Deer Game Call is a simple but very effective caller.

4. Mock Scrape Kits:

Bucks frequently check scrapes during the rut to mark their territory and find does. Creating a mock scrape with a product like Wildlife Research Center’s Magnum Scrape Dripper can keep bucks visiting your area.

5. Attractant Food Blocks:

High-energy food sources like acorn-flavored attractant blocks can keep deer in the area longer, increasing your chances of drawing in big bucks. Bucks and doe need to eat and will go to places they know there is food. Throw out Antler King Apple Flavored Grainiac Block for Deer | 20 lb Block Year-Round Feed Supplement/Attractant anytime of the year and deer will have a treat.

Best Places to Look for Big Bucks:

1. Edge of Bedding Areas:

Bucks often patrol the edges of doe bedding areas during the rut. They tend to stay just outside the bedding zones, waiting for does to come into heat.

2. Travel Corridors:

Bucks will use natural funnels or travel corridors, such as pinch points or narrow strips of cover, as they move from one area to another in search of does.

3. Creek Bottoms and Riverbeds:

Bucks like to travel along creeks and rivers as they offer cover and water. These areas can be great ambush spots during the rut.

4. Ridge Lines:

Bucks often use ridge lines to travel because they offer a vantage point to spot danger and scent-check the area for does. Hunting just off the side of a ridge can be very productive.

5. Food Sources Near Cover:

Even during the rut, bucks will stop by reliable food sources, especially those close to cover. Look for spots with acorns, crop fields, or mast-producing trees that are near thick woods.

Implementing these strategies and using the right attractants can significantly increase your chances of harvesting a mature buck during the rut. Remember bucks are chasing doe everywhere. If you have mature doe around you a buck will find them, just be patient.
